Started freeCodeCamp RWD courseAfter I decided to start learning to code using freeCodeCamp, I started their Responsive Web Design certificate course. It covers HTML and CSS, starting with the very basics, and even teaches how to make different shapes and animate them! I had no idea this was possible using only HTML and CSS! I was able to breeze through the exercises/tasks pretty quickly. I had some familiarity with HTML and CSS from building and styling Joomla websites, which made most of the exercises easy to complete. Being new to freeCodeCamp, and online bootcamps in general, I was unaware that fCC has a YouTube channel with tutorials to accompany the exercises. The exercises were short tasks with brief instructions, and were fairly straightforward but there was very little continuity from one set of tasks to the next. Finished the RWD exercises and started the five certification projectsAfter completing the tasks/exercises, I moved on to the five (5) certification projects. That's when I realized that, yes, the exercises were easy, but, I didn't feel like the lessons were cohesive and I was taking a bit longer than I expected to complete the projects. I didn't retain nearly as much as I thought I should have. I had pretty much completed the Survey Form and Tribute Page when I saw something I could not believe! The Responsive Web Design Course I had nearly finished was discontinued and would not count towards a certificate!Needless to say, I kinda freaked out! I had completed the tasks and was about halfway finished with the certification projects, and all that work went down the drain. Or, so I thought.
What had happened was that freeCodeCamp revamped their RWD program, and the one I had already been working on, is now the "Legacy RWD course" and is no longer applicable towards a certificate. I had mixed feelings. On one hand, I was upset I put the time into it and it seemed like it was for nothing. But, on the other hand, I saw the changes freeCodeCamp made to the RWD program and I was actually happy with the way it is now organized! The new program has many of the same type of tasks, and more, but they are all organized into complete "projects" where I (the student) writes the code from beginning to end. And, to top it off, the five certification projects are exactly the same! The work I had put into completing them up to that time would not go to waste. And because the New RWD course taught skills in a better way, and more of them, I have been able to continually make updates to my Certification Projects. As of right now, I have submitted four of the five required Projects, and have only started the final one: Portfolio. |
